                                        What is ASE certification?

You may have heard of ASE certification for mechanics, what you may not know is that there are 8 areas of certification for automotive technicians.

When someone has all 8 areas certified, he is classified as a “Master” technician. The areas are:

  1. engine repair and rebuilding

  2. engine performance

  3. brakes

  4. steering and suspension

  5. electrical

  6. air conditioning and heating

  7. automatic transmissions

  8. manual transmissions and drive trains

There is also a certification for advanced engine performance, which deals with computerized engine controls, etc..  Few technicians obtain this certification, and many take the test several times to pass it.

It only takes one technician certified in one area in order for a shop to be allowed to hang the ASE shingle out front.  Next time you take your car to the shop, you may want to check the areas of certification of the mechanic who works on your car.

Certification is no guarantee the technician will be careful and do the job right, but it at least tells you he knows enough to pass a test about different areas. There are eight different categories of tests that the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) offers automotive technicians.  You are called "certified" by passing just one. You have to pass all eight categories to be certified as a "Master Auto Technician".

Is the shop itself qualified?

There are volumes of technical data that must be on hand to diagnose and repair modern fuel, electrical and ignition systems.  Does the shop have the reference material and diagnostic equipment to tackle today's "High Tech" vehicles?  Does the shop have the tools and equipment to do the job right?

At CarScope, we are committed to keeping up with the technology and doing the best job we can for you and your family.
