Tips for saving gas

  1. Keep your car properly tuned for top fuel efficiency. Inspect spark plugs, air filter fuel filter and belts at least every three months. Clean fuel injectors and air intake regularly.
  2. Make sure your gas cap fits properly. During the summer and in hot areas gas can evaporate from your car if the gas cap does not fit properly. You could easily lose 5 or more gallons a month.
  3. Make sure your tires are properly inflated, rotated and balanced.
  4. Have your technician inspect suspension and chassis parts for occasional misalignment. Bent wheels, axles, bad shocks and broken springs create engine drag and are unsafe at high traveling speeds.
  5. Keep windows closed when traveling at high speeds. Open windows cause air drag, reducing mileage by 10 percent.
  6. lf your vehicle has cruise control, use it where it is safe to do so. It can save you 5 to 10 percent of a gallon of gas on long trips
  7. Avoid pressing and releasing the accelerator when driving. This practice wastes fuel, but also puts excessive wear on the drive train of your vehicle.
  8. When starting your car avoid prolonged warming of the engine, 35 to 45 seconds is enough, even in cold weather.
  9. Don’t top off your gasoline tank. A single drop of gasoline on the ground evaporates into the equivalent pollution as a mile of driving or more.
  10. Don’t speed. Cars get about 21 percent more mileage at 55 mph than at 70 mph.
